Rabun County's average temperature for January is 48.9 degrees and 79.8 degrees in August. It is titled the rainiest county in Georgia with an average rainfall of 70 inches per year.
Rabun County has a total area of 377 square miles, 6 square miles of it is water. Roughly 60% of the land is in U.S. National Forrest and State Parks, 20% is owned by Georgia Power and the rest is privately held.
LAKES
The three major lakes of Rabun County were created in the early 20th century by Georgia Power. The lakes were created for hydroelectric power generation. Lake Burton is the largest lake covering 2,775 acres and boasting 62 miles of shoreline. Lake Rabun covers 835 acres and has 25 miles of shoreline. Lake Seed covers 240 acres and has 13 miles of shoreline.
MOUNTAINS
Rabun County is home to the 2nd and 3rd highest peaks in Georgia: Rabun Bald is 4,696 feet and Dick's Knob is 4,620 feet. Rabun County has eight peaks higher than 4,000 feet and over 60 peaks that are between 3,000 and 4,000 feet.
HIKING & WATERALLS
The county has numerous waterfalls, hiking trails, and trout streams. Most notable of the hiking trails, a portion of the Appalachian Trail runs through the county. In addition, 37 miles of the Bartram Trail are located in Rabun County.
TROUT FISHING
Rabun County has many mountain streams perfect for trout fishing such as: Tallulah River, Coleman Creek & Wildcat Creek. There are lots more prime fishing places including the lakes. The hatchery at Lake Burton gives kids under 12 and their grandparents an opportunity to fish in a mountain stream stocked with thousands of rainbow trout each season.
WINE
The Georgia Wine Highway runs through Rabun County. The county boasts two award winning wineries- Persimmon Creek Vineyard and Tiger Mountain Winery. Both wineries offer special events throughout the year and are open to the public.
DEMOGRAPHICS
There were 15,050 people, 6,279 households, and 4,352 families residing in the county as of the census of 2000. The population density for Rabun County is 41 people per square mile. The 2007 Estimate shows a population of 16,519.
Clayton, the county seat, is located 115 miles (roughly 1 hour and 30min) north of Atlanta, 83 miles west of Greenville, SC and 90 miles south of Asheville, NC.
